Andrew Carnegie, Libraries, and Democracy


The New Hampshire Library Trustees Association, as part of its 50th Anniversary celebration is pleased to present a lecture by historian Jeffrey Smith portraying Andrew Carnegie. The presentation will be in the Gilmore Room of the library on Thursday, July 19th at 2:00 pm. Jeffrey Smith, Professor of History at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri, has given over 150 performances as Carnegie, P. T. Barnum, and William Clark.
In his lifetime, Andrew Carnegie funded 1,679 public libraries in 1,142 American communities. In New Hampshire, he funded libraries in Berlin, Claremont, Dover, Franklin, Lebanon, Littleton, Raymond, Rochester, and Whitefield. This lecture is one of a series presented at four of these libraries-Franklin, Littleton, Whitefield, and the Fiske Free Library in Claremont. This lecture is funded in part by the New Hampshire Humanities Council.
