Story Fest 2006 Update

The Friends of the Fiske Free Library will present their 6th annual Story Fest on Saturday, November 18, 2006 from 10:00 am to 3 pm. Featured storytellers are Simon Brooks, Angela Klingler, Matt Krug and Bineke Oort.

Story Fest is a free family event and open to children and adults.

Story Fest was designed to showcase the talents of storytellers from New Hampshire and Vermont. It was held in October for four years, but in 2005 it was moved to the November weekend that has been designated for a world-wide storytelling celebration known as "Tellabration."

"Tellabration" was started in 1988 by J.G. Pinkerton, a Connecticut yarn spinner who envisioned an evening of adult storytelling across the state. That year storytelling was held simultaneously in six Connecticut towns and the following year Texas and Missouri joined in. Since then "Tellabration" has expanded to include a weekend of storytelling around the world, at schools, libraries, museums, elder hostels, and even on trains and planes.

Story Fest will begin at 10:00 with Simon Brooks telling "Second-Hand Tales" from all over the world. Born and raised in the United Kingdom, Brooks now lives in Orford, New Hampshire and is the Children's Librarian at Latham and Peabody Libraries, Thetford, Vermont. He began storytelling in 1990 while working for the Youth Hostel Association of England and Wales.

Combining passions for both children's literature and folklore, Brooks blends unique voices and lively actions to tell his tales. European, South American, African, Chinese and Japanese folk and fairy tales make up his repertoire of tales from around the world.

At 11:00 Angela Klingler, Salem, New Hampshire will present "Faire Tales." Nationally recognized and telling professionally since 1989, she has performed her animated retellings of traditional world folktales, fables and fairytales at libraries, schools, museums and art festivals across the country. Relocating from San Antonio, Texas to "southern" New Hampshire in 1999, she is the founder of the Merrimack Valley Storytellers Guild and a past president of the League for the Advancement of New England Storytelling (LANES). . Her audio "Faire Tales" is a National Parenting Publications Award winner.

At noon, the stories will stop for a short lunch break to allow the audience to take the edge off their hunger before the afternoon tellers begin. The Friends of the Fiske Free Library will be offering a cup of soup and sandwich for sale in the Sarah Gilmore Room of the library.

At 1:00 pm, Matt Krug, Freedom, New Hampshire, will present "Bringing the Light, Using the Light and Seeing the Light," a mix of traditional and original stories that all feature "light," either in the literal or figurative sense. Born, raised and educated in New Hampshire, Krug has been telling stories for over fifteen years. His background as a teacher and naturalist is evident in his stories, which are sprinkled with humor and “good ole New England common sense.” A founding member of the Mountain Storytellers Guild in Conway, he is best known for his use of storytelling to teach about the night sky.

At 2:00 pm, Bineke Oort, Hartland, Vermont, will close Story Fest with "The Affable Lion," stories from Africa, Holland, the Far East and the American West. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Oort founded the Upper Valley Story Circle. Her deep concern for the earth and all its creatures and a longstanding practice of yoga and mindfulness meditation are reflected in her choice of tales and storytelling style. Some of her favorites are from Native American cultures, wisdom tales from the East, and sacred stories of all traditions.

Story Fest will take place inside the Fiske Free Library, 108 Broad Street, Claremont, New Hampshire. All programs are free and open to the public. For more information call 603-542-7017.
